The Opportunity

Modern Pixel is a web design and digital marketing agency serving the Charlotte metro area. We build and manage WordPress websites for small businesses — healthcare practices, home service companies, professional consultants, travel agencies, and more.

We're looking for a part-time Summer Intern to join our team and get hands-on experience with real client projects, AI-assisted front end development, and agency operations. This is a paid position with real responsibilities, real clients, and real portfolio-building work.

This is not a "get coffee and file papers" internship. You will work directly with the owner on client websites, learn modern AI-assisted development workflows, and contribute to live projects from week one.

Details

  • Duration: Summer 2026 (approximately 10–14 weeks, flexible start/end)
  • Schedule: Part-time, 20 hours/week (4 hours/day, Monday–Friday)
  • Hours: Flexible within 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM ET (you pick morning, midday, or afternoon block)
  • Pay: $18–$20/hour depending on experience
  • Location: Matthews, NC area — hybrid, in-person at cowork space regularly, flexible remote after ramp-up

What You'll Do

Day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Build and edit WordPress websites under the direction of the owner
  • Use Claude AI (Code and Chat) to assist with development tasks — writing code, building page sections, running speed and SEO optimizations, and troubleshooting issues
  • Work in our custom agency portal to manage support tickets, log time, and track project progress
  • Perform website maintenance: plugin updates, security checks, broken link audits, image optimization
  • Document and fix site performance issues identified through audits
  • Upload content, format blog posts, and make design updates on client sites
  • Test website changes across browsers and devices before deployment
  • Assist with SEO and website optimization playbooks
  • Assist with developing and executing agency and client strategies

You might also get to:

  • Observe client discovery calls and learn how we scope projects
  • Help prepare client deliverables and reports
  • Contribute to internal process documentation
  • Participate in website launch QA checklists

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Front End Development, Computer Science, Software Development, Graphic Design, Digital Marketing, or a related field (rising sophomores through seniors)
  • Comfort learning new software tools quickly
  • Attention to detail — you will be working on live client websites
  • Reliable, self-directed, and able to manage a 4-hour daily work block independently
  • Own laptop capable of web development work
  • Available to work in-person in the Matthews, NC area regularly

Preferred — but we'll train you if you don't have experience yet:

  • Basic familiarity with HTML and CSS
  • WordPress experience (any level)
  • Experience with any page builder (Elementor, etc.)
  • Basic understanding of SEO concepts
  • Familiarity with GitHub or version control
  • Experience using AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, etc.) for productivity
  • Interest in web design, software development, or UX/UI as a career path
  • Interest in digital marketing, SEO, or content strategy
  • Interest in AI-assisted development and automation

What You'll Learn

  • AI-assisted front end development — using Claude Code to build real websites faster. Most agencies haven't adopted this yet, and it will set you apart.
  • WordPress at a professional level — not YouTube tutorials, but actual client work with real deadlines and stakeholders.
  • Agency operations & business management — how a web agency manages clients, runs projects, and operates as a small business day-to-day.
  • SEO and GEO fundamentals — practical search optimization and generative engine optimization, not just theory.
  • Using GitHub — version control workflows in a professional environment.
  • StoryBrand messaging framework — how professional websites are structured to convert visitors into customers.
  • Client-facing standards — QA processes, testing, deployment, and the attention to detail required for professional work.

About Modern Pixel

Modern Pixel is a small, owner-operated web agency that delivers senior-level work without the bloated overhead of a bigger shop. We work with small businesses at every stage — established shops that have been burned by previous agencies, owners who have outgrown their DIY website, and new businesses launching with a foundation that actually converts. Our approach combines clear messaging strategy (we are a StoryBrand Certified Guide) with modern, conversion-focused web design.

We run our entire operation through our own in-house developed custom portal and business software tools, use AI-assisted development to move fast, and maintain high standards for every site we touch. A small team with big standards — which means you'll get more responsibility and mentorship than you would at a larger shop.
